Since General elections has begun and we will have a new government in 30 -35 days from now, let’s analyze the options we have. But before we analyze it, let’s study a bush.
There is a plant called Babool (Acacia victoriae) which could be found in India very easily. There are issues with Babool which are:
· It absorbs underground water a lot and if there is no underground water they absorb the humidity from the air surrounding it.
· It never shelters bird because it produces less oxygen and emits more carbon dioxide.
· It also affects soil nutrients adversely.
· It can regenerate from suckers/roots.
You must be wondering why I am talking about this bush. I am talking about it because it is very tough to get rid of it. Unless you finish it from roots “completely”, it pops-up again.
Today in India we have a system which is quite similar to this bush. The system is thoroughly corrupt. It makes us helpless through many ways. It gives power to handful of people and billions of people are given just one right i.e. vote once in five -years and then get out of the arena. Each five or ten years we get fed up of one branch, we cut it and get another branch in power. It has been happening since decades and things have turned bad to worse.
Now let’s talk about the choices we have got to fight this system:
1. BJP/Congress/SP/BSP/DMK/AIADMK/SAD/LJP/RJD etc
2. AAP
You must be wondering why I have clubbed all the parties in first position as one and AAP alone in second? Well there is very simple reason behind it.
All the parties listed in 1 are different branches of the Babool tree. They live and thrive in the present system. They get terrified when somebody asks to tweak/change the system. They feel that the system is good enough. Few things here and there can make it appear good for everybody while basic things are not going to change. Precisely these people think that cutting one or another branch will make things better.
The party listed in 2 i.e. AAP thinks that the system is inefficient and few changes can’t do anything in long run. They want a complete overhaul in the system.
Now since we know that two biggest players are BJP and Congress in Indian Political circus and most of the people are fed up with mismanagement of Congress for 10 years, they will end up voting for BJP/Modi.
So let’s analyze Modi. He has been projecting himself as someone who has done lots of development and changed face of Gujarat. People are also in impression that once he comes to power, he would make things change. Below is what Modi believes in:
↳ Present system is good.
↳ His few actions can make the things better for common people.
↳ India need to uproot congress party as it is root of all evils. (Rest all are hunky-dory)
↳ He says 5 years of his rule will change face of India. How? God knows.
↳ Whoever comes with him will start doing good things, irrespective of his/her past.
↳ Precisely he will make things better without changing the system.
So to put things in perspective, Modi will rule us the way Congress have had ruling us. If you expect something miraculous from Modi then I would request you to wake up and come out of fool’s paradise. I can assure you that if Modi is elected (there are chances of him, I feel) then we would be as restless to get rid of him five years from now as we are in present to get rid of Congress and MMS.
Now let’s see what AAP stands for. The idea behind inception of party was that the system is thoroughly corrupt and cutting a branch of it would never work. They believe unless the system gets a complete overhaul things would not change to the extent required. How are they planning to get the system change? They want system to be:
↳ More transparent system.
↳ More accountable government officials.
↳ A system which is more sensitive about the people’s issues.
↳ A system where laws are for people and not vice-versa.
↳ A system which helps corporates but kills crony capitalism.
↳ A system which believes power must be given to the people to take decisions about their local matters (obviously with proper checks and balances).
↳ Political parties should be completely transparent about their funding.
↳ Make people stakeholder of this system and not victim of it.
So these people do not believe in present corrupt system. They want to change it to make it more common people friendly. They have plans for few things and might not have for few. But they are ambitious. They are courageous. They are people with an aim. They have few good people and few bad people with them but if they are able to do what they believe in those bad people will leave them as soon as they join.
If we go back to our Babool bush, we find that AAP is one who wants to uproot the Babool tree since that is the only option to get rid of it. Modi believes that let’s cut one branch or more and make people feel less threatened.
Modi’s approach might give us good picture of short term but long terms picture is the same corrupt and insensitive system whereas AAP’s approach gives us short term picture of difficulties, issues but long term picture looks better.
Now if you think that System can be corrected by cutting one or another branch then you can vote Modi. I am sure 5 or 10 years later you would vote for Rahul since Modi phenomenon would be over by then. But if you feel that system is that Babool bush and nothing but uprooting it can help us get rid of it then you are left with one choice and that is AAP and Arvind Kejriwal.
If I would be given a choice, I would opt for short term difficulties so that future would be what we want it to be. You might opt for another approach as you have all the freedom but then be ready to be disappointed after 5 years.
I feel that Modi might be the hero we get this time but Arvind Kejriwal is the hero we deserve.
